I DRESS AND then toss the salad I made and set it aside while Chase checks on the chicken outside. The microwave dings, letting me know the potatoes are done. Carefully pulling them out, I set them on two plates. Chase already told me I had to have some of everything on my plate. I’m not sure when he decided to be my boss, but he sure is bossy all of a sudden, especially when it comes to food and me.
The back door opens and he comes inside carrying a plate with chicken on it. “I hope this tastes okay.” He uses a fork to stab at a chicken breast and then put it on my plate. I put salad on our plates. Following him outside we sit in a couple of folding chairs that he’s got out there and a wrought iron table.
In silence, we eat. “Oh, I forgot I got you something special to drink that’ll help make you feel better.” He disappears inside, returning a minute later with a clear plastic bottle. “This is grape Pedialyte. It’ll replenish your electrolytes.”
“How did you know how to calm me down last night?”
Setting his fork down he looks up at me. “For about two years, I had a nasty coke habit. I’d been on many benders over that time and needed help coming down. You just remember what works and what doesn’t—granted you may just be more hungover than anything.”
“I honestly don’t feel that bad. My nose hurts a little bit and my head too.”
“I’ve got a saline solution that you can use to rinse your sinuses.”
I look up from my plate. “I promise I’m never doing that stuff again. I can’t thank you enough for everything. You really didn’t have to do it.”
“Stop thanking me, okay?” I nod. “You know how you can thank me? Eat as much of your food as you can.”
I finish most of the food on my plate and I clean up the dinner dishes and wipe off the counter. The leftovers go into the refrigerator, and I don’t miss that he’s got lots of healthy food in there and it makes me smile because he doesn’t seem the type to have that kind of stuff stocked, which means he did it for me. Of course, I don’t think about it too much because obviously he’s not into me.
Last night I thought for sure he was going to kiss me, but instead, he kissed my forehead and then moved me back to sit next to him. I certainly won’t be making that mistake again. In the living room, I find Chase reclined in his chair watching a ballgame. I grab my e-reader out of my purse and open the book I’ve been reading.
Sadie is still trying to find out who the real Sadie is and Double H (Hispanic Hottie) is being all alpha and swoony with her. These books know how to suck you in and make you lose hours and this is actually the third time I’ve read this series.
